Looking to get records cut in bulk

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Looking to get records cut in bulk

Hi. Who knows who cut me 40 minutes of music on 20 12" records for the best price (Preferably stereo, but i'll settle for mono if it cost's too much)? Right now the best deal i'm looking at is Funky Frankenstein records for a little more than a $100 (not incl. shipping). Thanks.

Ethan is going to cut you LPs for $5 each? That’s about the cost of blanks. I find it REALLY hard to believe that’s real, and I GUARANTEE you won’t find anyone else who come even close to that, especially stereo.

I have just confirmed with Ethan that he is NOT willing to do 20 hours of work for a net loss on materials and free labor.

Better check that pricing further.

Stereo LPs are going to be $30+ EACH, and that is on the cheap side.

You will not find anyone who wants to come even close to that price. I’d say jump on it.

And if he is still cutting on that 75a, he’s not going to come close to 20min a side. That thing has a 120lpi feedscrew. Maybe 14 a side?

He/they don't cut 20 minutes per side. Keep looking.

I'm cutting on a 6N right now.
I think my current time limit is around 17-18 minutes.
And for sides that long I'd tack on a time charge.
Also "he" would be correct. FF is a one man rodeo.

Sorry, but I think that's just that's too little time to cut for my gigantic album, even if I faded out and even removed some tracks.

I'm curious though, how much time do you think you could pack onto a 10 inch disc?

I thought you were talking about 12"? You seem confused and without focus young Padawan :)

I'm thinking about cutting double 10" records. I love Napoleon Dynamite BTW :D .

I just had to post that, all in good fun : )

10" you can plan on between 10-15min per side @ 33rpm.
Amount of low end, stereo image and program time generally dictate what fit's and at what quality.
Not all lathes operate the same way so these numbers only apply on certain systems.

As for cost, It's really a time and labor intensive manual process when compared to digital manipulation/manufacturing of music.
Keep asking questions and I'm sure you'll find a path to what works best for your situation.

Right, but I was just wondering how much Ethan can fit on his lathe specifically. I don't think he's going to read all of these posts, so i'll just PM him. I think 20 12" records is too ambitious money wise, not to mention many services can't fit the amount of music I want cut onto a single record or just won't let me order it (roughly 40.5 minutes).

I can help! Affordable and stereo available as well:
www.audiogeography.com

I can do about 22 minutes per side on a 12", and about 15:30 on a 10" for the HIFI stereo (vinylrecorder)
don't do 12" on the LOFI, but I can do 15-15:30 on the LOFI 10" also (presto 6N)
making lathe cuts on a Presto 6N, HIFI stereo cuts on vinylrecorder
at Audio Geography Studios, Providence, RI USA

When I was a young lad, about your age, old Doc Schoenemann would be out in his shed on Sunday mornings cutting records. I would help shovel coal into the boiler on his Neumann VMS 14. If he liked you he would cut you a side for a quarter, sometimes for free if you gave him an onion he took a shine to....
