Harara [Hara] portable lathe
Hello guys- how are you? I recently bought this little Harara record lathe. I got some great styli from my shank, a heat lamp, vaccum and everything. But I've had a few hiccups- there is a speed adjustment knob but I just can't nail the right speed. Is there a trick to this? I remember reading it can be done with a flash light. The music is going on there great but I have to slow my turntable down. The other problem was I lost power all completely this morning- it could be the step down adaptor though- it was red hot...
Anyway any help would be great. I live in Sydney Australia- happy to somewhere or have one of you over if you can lend a hand. I'll make you lunch or whatever you like too.
Thanks
James

Re: Harara portable lathe
The problem is it's running 100v 60hz. I have a step down to play in Australia to 240v. However still after measuring with rpm app it's still a little fast.

yeah i was digging through "secrets" section the pther day when i saw your thread - http://www.lathetrolls.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6859&p=44304&hilit=harara#p44304
I'm glad you posted this, I have never heard of this before, even an old timer like aussie0zzborn had not seen one.
I was expecting something along the lines of an atom/vanrock, but this looks as if a vanrock had a child with a radiotone or fairchild.

Re: Harara portable lathe
It's actually "Hara".
Re: Harara portable lathe
That's a beauty, I just bought an Atom from Japan so about to find out if it works with the step down transformer, I read that newer, 80's, motors might be variable and work off both frequencys, on the way back from the US will post something when I'm home
Re: Harara portable lathe
Some good information on this lathe in this thread including a video of one in action:

Re: Harara [Hara] portable lathe
Cuts great- but still running fast. Even when I sync up rpm app to both Hara lathe and my place back turntable. Not heaps fast about 2.3 ...
Hmmm what to do?

Hi there - your answer could be to purchase a UPS.

hi James
try matching the audio to the turntable speed..
one of my 6ns does this and i have to change the pitch on sound forge before i cut
however i cannot do real time cuts with it.

Re: Harara [Hara] portable lathe
My transformer is 115 an not 100. Would that be the issue?

Re: Harara [Hara] portable lathe
I opened her up and this is the motor. Also I got a new transformer 100v not 115.
Still some issues- runs a little too fast.
Any ideas?

Re: Harara [Hara] portable lathe
Hi,
Are you 50 or 60 hz power in your location? If you look at the motor you will see the speed varies for each line frequency. I'm assuming there must be a mechanical adjustment in the lathe to compensate for the speed difference. This may be as simple as a stepped pulley or drive/ idler wheel. It may have been done at the factory based on sale country. Does the lathe have rating plate on the outside that indicates line voltage and frequency? Is the speed difference you are seeing about what the motor indicates. If not, then you may have some other mechanical issue.
