power amp reading "protect" (solved)

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

power amp reading "protect" (solved)

setup: presto 6N, with fairchild cutting head (rewound to 8ohm), modern power amp

at a random point yesterday, my power amp came up with a "protect" notice.
I've had it happen before, usually when the wires were touching and causing a short

In this case,
-I've made fresh connections all around (stripped the speaker wires and re-connected)
-measured the head impedance, right around 8 ohm
-left the amp unplugged to reset the circuit

at a loss on what else could be the issue, any help is appreciated!

I have this problem with a Servo 600 a few months ago. Not sure if you are using the same.

But I didn't have a Presto in that time and I was just using with speakers and a turntable (Was waiting my Presto to arrive).
Was always "protect". And than the "protect" fade out and I thought was good. No luck.

Problem was with my Servo. So I sent back and received a new one. Still in guarantee. Called Servo and Amazon.
I tried all too. New wires, unplug, reset...

Hope you can fix.

P.S. Heard a few Servo 600 have this issue after a few years. Not sure if is true.

So you have a problem with an amplifier. What brand/model is it?

update: I forgot about the former issues with this head!
I was having this issue some years ago (with another power amp) it ended up being the head connections were shorting out against the 6N fork that holds the head in place. The head was modded to run the wires through the front, instead of the back, problem solved.
now - it seems the connectors or extra wire in the back was causing an issue.

the head works fine when not mounted, and now I put some electrical tape on the back when mounting and it's fine.

(note: I believe this is an Olson brand fairchild clone)

thanks all for the help and replies
