Insulating lacquer coil

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Hello all, a question, what type of insulating lacquer do you use for fix an old coil, or a new coil wound ?

Thanks.

I've been using clear nail polish as it is easy to source, seemingly very robust, and simple to use. A guitar maker in my home town has been using it on his guitar pickups for 53 years, still swears by it.

A more sketchy solution is PVA [regular 'white glue']. I don't recommend it but I have heard it works.

Good alternative choices include epoxy resin [unfortunately is often sold in '5 minute' form, which is too little time for me to wind coils and apply it throughout] and standard Varathane [lots of working time, a little fume-heavy for my brains preference].

Hope it goes well!
