Help needed with serious skipping issue
Hi Lathers,
I've been working on my 2.0 version of a homemade record lathe. The device is working above exprectations so I can't complain!
This is my first time building anything as mechanical/precise as this.
The lathe, made from old scanner parts and new 3D printer parts.
However all of my iterations of the machine yielded skipping records.
As a cutting-stylus I use a simple sewing needle at around 90° (pretty much perpendicular) to the recording medium.
The medium (for now) is CD's.
The cutting head just before the needle was placed
When I play back the records they sound pretty nice. Good volume and an overall decent range of highs and lows.
But as soon as the record has made a few turns with sound the needle starts to skip and drift towards the end of the record.
Recording at lower volumes and using some lubrication on the blanks did reduce the skip and drift, but it is still there.
What factors can cause this?
- The grooves not deep enough?
- Too close to the end of the record (CD's)?
- The angle of the needle on the record?
- The tip of the needle too sharp?
Thanks!

Re: Help needed with serious skipping issue
Assume that your groove is not deep enough for whatever reason. Buy a microscope and check. This would be a good starting point.
Re: Help needed with serious skipping issue
Thanks Aussie0zborn. I have a USB microscope on order so hopefully that will shed some light on the depth.
Re: Help needed with serious skipping issue
definitely check your groove depth, I would suggest checking out a pressed record you know well, and comparing the groove depth on that.
keep in mind you're embossing on the CDs, and will need more depth. also the pitch system will be more advanced as to optimize time per side on the pressed record, so yours will look different. when in doubt with embossing, go as deep as possible before you hear a scraping sort of noise (obviously dependent on time per side/lpi as well)

Thanks guys!
I have increased the weight of the head and added a heating lamp resulting in a deeper groove. I have now cut my first record without skipping issues!
I do suspect vertical bouncing has increased somewhat but for now that does not present a significant problem.

Contrats! Looks great. I think you will have way better results when you buy recordette/presto styluses that are available cheap on ebay. I must check, maybe I have some spare ones from "recordette" times..

Hi,
Nice DIY setup. Maybe look into adding some damping to your arm (e.g. silicone grease or a dashpot). You want to kill the tendency to oscillate at its natural frequency. You may also have to look at changing the natural frequency. If too slow, it may not track warps well. To fast might be more prone to bounce.

Hey,..
Can u make a snapshoot of the groove u have cutted?
I think it is a phaseproblem!
What is your cutting Stylus?
Best reguards

I'm still not a professional, but I learn pretty fast. especially with my eyes and ears!

Three years later... 2 beautiful daughters later, that is...
Thanks for all the great feedback. I have indeed now ordered a couple of sapphire cutting styli to also get a deeper groove.
I do however have some heavy bouncing going on while cutting. A problem which will not be solved with a different stylus.
I was wondering if decreasing the length of the arm will also help decrease the vertical bounce. Anyone?

does your cutterhead have anything like a dashpot for shock absorbing?
