UNIVERSAL RECORDER - PROFESSIONAL

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

UNIVERSAL RECORDER - PROFESSIONAL

Hi there,

I have with the help of a few friends restored a UNIVERSAL PRO RECORDER

I can't find any supporting documentation so it was quite the puzzle to get back together.

I am hoping to get the Grampian type B mono cutting head reconditioned.

I missed out on a Gotham Mono amplifier recently so im interested in finding a good match for it in future.

Any assistance or direction on finding out more about this unit - very welcome!

Cheers

that lathe is on the cover of the Robert K Morrison book, "Disk Recording 1930-1960"
he talks, mostly anecdotally about it's use and function
making lathe cuts on a Presto 6N, HIFI stereo cuts on vinylrecorder

Yes. however the one on the cover i note is not that same as mine... seen a few but they have different lathe bases, and the flywheel/motor config is different. i havent found any accurate images or manuals of my model yet!

No sorry my guess is 40-50's - i know from the emi laquers preserved with the lathe that it was used for recording the horse racing back in the day - i presume they would take the discs and replay them on radio...
