Antistatic / lubricating liquid for souri's blanks

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Antistatic / lubricating liquid for souri's blanks

Hi, first post here, but have been following the forum and learning since two years.
I have a Vinylrecorder, i'm cutting Souri's blanks with good results, i finished the pink antistatic/lubricating liquid, i will buy again from him in the future but need to finish a run quickly and was wondering if anybody knows what i can use, something i can buy at the hardware store or make myself, i tried an antistatic liquid for records but i doesn't work, the pvc comes out of the record very "static" and the vacuum is not able to suck it out.
i'm cutting with records heated at 40 degrees, tried with and without stylus heating, same result.
i really appreciate anybodies input.
thnx

Try 2 dops of dishwashing liquid in a lukewarm water glass. Toss gently. Apply on the blank, let dry and cut.
It will help to finish your work

Ah I see when you say dish washing liquid is that the liquid you use in a dish washing machine or the liquid you use for washing the dishes by hand in a sink?

I highly suggest also using a negative ion generator to negate static charge on the disc first. Then use something applied to the disc. As Steven suggests, liquid dish soap. Or, you can use spray on turtlewax. I have a plastic cutting guide that I wrote. It is posted below. Also, I made a plastic cutting video guide.

Ah I see, glad I asked the question, as I was not sure which you meant. It used to be made of Toluene, is that still the case? I have a feeling it is not anymore as that substance is not good for the health but hey you never know.

So plain old hand washing up liquid is all you need.

There are many types of turtle wax. The kind in the small tin is the type I think you are referring to. The kind I mean is a spy type. Totally different formula.

I can't stress using a negative ion generator enough as in the video.

A bit off-topic but what about the ioniser that is on the vrx2000?
What is the most important? liquid? ionizer or simply both?

Let me take this opportunity to give kudos for a job well done - Todd's Plastic cutting guide. Enlightening, informative, and thorough. Excellent, Sir! If ever I cut with these mats, I WILL revisit!!!

Talking about this I've just seen Todd's Plastic cutting video and I have two pure newbie questions about it.
If you had had to cut both sides, you would have removed both protection sheets at first right?
These sheets looks super sticky. Is there a risk to bent the blank?
The blank doesn't look 100% flat to my eyes. Is this normal with makrolon or other blanks?
Sorry for the basic questions. Never seen someone cut plastic and explain it in details before.
Thanks for the video and the PDF :)

Thank you :)
It could be worth creating a new topic in the newbie section.
Btw I like your new video with the explanations about the test tone grooves.

Probably a good idea to start a dedicated thread.

Still no time for pics. But, I can say that the discs are flat. When you apply a lamp for heating, if you overheat, it will definitely warp a little. But, not too much. When it cools, it flattens. You can put it between a couple books to help it flatten. The protective sheets have no adhesive residue left behind when removed. They cling like silicone sheets stick to other surfaces. There is a lot of static generated when they are removed.

The new video is required for the next video to make sense. Thanks for the feedback!
