Question about Moding a 78 rpm Wilcox Gay Recordio

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

i have the same recordio, mint condition.
I think if you changed the rubber wheel diameter you could make is spin at a different speed.

I wish I could figure out how to slow the speed down. I'm not too into embossing however I really want to find a presto or rekokut

You would make the wheel bigger in diameter.
Size of wheel divided by 33.33 times 45 equals new diameter. .. I think.

Just change the wheel diameter? So in other words swap out a 45 rpm wheel in a turntable??? that's it?

I don't know the setup of that particular Recordio.

In a lot of machines, changing the idler wheel diameter will NOT change the speed. It's the capstan diameter which must be changed.

In other words, if there is a capstan being directly driven by the motor, and that capstan is making contact with a rubber wheel which is then driving a turntable rim, that idler wheel will merely transmit the rate of motion at the circumference of that capstan.

If the rubber wheel IS the capstan, well, that's a whole nother story.

All of you have been very nice and helpful....Forgive me I am new to this and am trying to get decent results with that I have. Question: To speed up the sound source so that you can cut on 78 and that it plays back at 45 rpm? whats the formula? Speed the source up by???

45 x 1.734 % =78.03 pretty close - someone please correct me if I'm off base. That being said, if you slow down a Recordio to playback, you are going to lose high end, which a Recordio is lacking to begin with. I suspect your recording will sound like it's under a heavy blanket. Recordios also pick up motor noise, and playing that back and a slower speed might cause quite a rumble.

78s don't actually spin at 78 rpm. In the 60hz AC countries (like the US) the standard is 78.26 rpm, and in 50hz AC countries it is 77.92. But yeah, that's a good point about the frequency loss you will have if you record fast and playback slow with a Recordio. They are simply not hi-fi machines.
