Neumann Ms 52H shank removal

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Neumann Ms 52H shank removal

I have a question and i was wondering if you can answer it.

I have a Neumann MS 52h cutting head and do not know how to remove the stylus.

I do not see any set screws for it. All i see is two screws for the heating wires.
It looks like its just stuck in there. I tried pulling the shank out but its stuck. I did not wanna add too much force to it.

Also Does anyone know what kind of shank fits on the head?

If you can answer the question that would help me out alot.

Thanks for your time and help,

Jccc

hello
it is a conical tapper. similar to the one for all newer neumann heads. but slightly other dimensions.
got the drawings somewhere. but not right now. also i can cehck on my ms52H.
so there was a tool to remove the stylus.
use some wd40. just one drop. and wait a day or two. then you should be able to remove.

Thank you for the reply! If you could locate the drawings and possibly post them that would help.

Also do you know if the shank is a 320 type?

ok
i found the drawings.
its a 1:50 cone. and on bottom of cone its 0.78mm diameter.
for es59,sx68,sx74 and newer its 1:20 tapper

the correct nrumann stylus is called 60 FMH

f= cone 1:50
m= microgroove¨
h= heating wires.

so i think there is no stylus made anymore for it. so you need to find old stylii.
or buy westrex stylus and build your own tapper.

Thank you for all thr information Flozki!

I was looking at a old "Micro-point Bulletin" article in in Mr Bodens book " The Basics to Disc Mastering" and it said the stylus model was 310.

I was wondering if you know a substitution that will work for it. Or if the Westrex 2B adapter that is on the apollo masters site (used with 320) might work for it?

Hello. i cant get the needle out of the cutting head and it looks like i just murdered the cutting stylus.
I put a drop of wd40 where the needle was and let it sit over night and when i tried to pull it off the next day i ended up breaking a piece of the needle off.

I saw on you post that there is a special tool to remove the needle but i do not own that.

Also is there any hidden clamp thats holding the needle in place?

Any help from you all would help alot.

if it is used up or broken needle, take it heat the soldering up to 250 degrees Celsius and touch the broken end of the needle for a few seconds, then so take tweezers and gently turn anticlockwise and right and top, comes to 100%

Thanks for the help. I tried what you described by heating up the shank and rotating it counter clock wise but it keeps getting worse!
The shank keeps breaking up. Right know its barely sticking out of the head now.

Its kinda screwed up right now. I have been trying to figure out how i could possibly open it up. And maybe just pop the needle out. But theres no screws.

I just contacted len horowits and maybe he could possibly fix it.

Hopefully he gets back to me.

I just got the head back with a 320 stylus adaptor. Here is a picture

Does anyone know what kind of silicone grease was used for the damping of this head?
