Styli

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

So, who are the suppliers of styli? Apollo for sure, but is anyone else hip to others making styli, specifically for a VMS-70?

Yes, they are heated to cut into a lacquer. I've been a fan of the ruby styli from apollo, but I've received a few bad ones recently & am just curious if there is another supplier out there. Specifically, I was ordering the 320.

My diamonds are for cutting plastic. They do have a heating wire.

I'm cutting lacquers. The sound of the ruby 320's is killer on my lathe, but I'm nervous about ordering them currently because of the large amount of poorly manufactured ones I've received. I'm just curious if any other manufacturers are out there. I guess I'll just keep ordering 4 or 5 of them at a time and hope that at least 1 or maybe 2 are acceptable.

Other than Apollo I know of no other source than New Old Stock that you see sometimes on eBay. I really don't have the issues with Apollo 320 styli that you seem to be having. Can you be more specific about what the issue is?

Sometimes I have issues with the glue on a 320 but Apollo always swaps

The glue was the issue. All over the tip. That, and a couple of misshapen ones, and one that appeared to have no burnishing facets

Oh well. Apollo was good about replacing them. It's just the waiting time for shipping that is kind of a bummer. I'll just have to keep a larger stock of them around. Oh well, such is life. Thanks for the input.

To end on a positive, I got my replacement styli from Apollo, and they are all cutting great!

I cant imagine the precision required to make those things. Every jeweler ive ever taken them to trying to get them resharpened either refused to to do it or wanted way more to resharpen them than it cost to buy them new. Apollo sells those basically at cost, just to keep the lacquer business going.

Yeah, I figured as much. My goal wasn't to trash Apollo, as I'm sure they try very hard, and made it very easy to swap out when they could easily tell me to just eat that cost. I was just curious if anyone else was producing them and/or if others had the same experience I've been having lately.

I can recommend the styli that Chris refers to has I have had a few off him,
look fine under microscope and heater wires are intact with no discolouring around cement
