audax rh5 diy repair assistance?
Our recording is dull and quite and my only guess is that the problem is the cutterhead. On top of that we were doing some experimenting in trying to get the thing functional, sent too much signal into it (foolishly waaaaay overamplified), and the damn thing started smoking. ugh
all we wanna do is cut some records.
I wouldn't mind sending it to someone but the only person I found got a bad review here saying it took 6 months to be returned and was untouched with a note that said he couldn't fix it.
I'm pretty well versed in fixing things up and working with electronics and wondering if it's feasible for me to do myself.
If so, can anyone help me out, point me in the right direction or lead me through the process?
You help would be greatly appreciated.

Could it be your stylus is dead or its not mounted properly? Is the cutterhead capable of cutting the high fidelity sound you are expecting?
I think the repair guy who got a bad rap here has only ever had that one bad rap. I have never dealt with the guy but from what I've read he is quite the authority on these things and the "go to" man in the USA. Others have praised his work. You might check it out further. Good luck with it.

gib fixes presto stuff well, and lesser cutters.. astatic and stuff..
I sent sent him an ol' RCA head, and he broke it [ snapped a tension bar ].. It never sounded right again.. good ting I didn't sell my presto head..
at first you always ting you blew da head.. my experience says you can push dem ol' non feedback mono heads pretty far w/o killin' dem..
a fuse dun hurt, and gives you a piece of mind..
aussie is probably right, bad stylus will make it sound like shit, for sure..
at first, tink user error.. if you try everyting to correct said error, wit no results.. den you being to question equipment..
I dunno if he will do it, but i bet markrob could fix it.. if it was actually dead, and he has time..
I'll never send anyting for an impedance change to gib again. Don't fix wat aint broken, just learn ow to use it.

Jay, are you using an online Rap Translator or something? Not everyone here has English as their first language so how about we stick to the plain English that everyone understands?JayDC wrote:gib fixes presto stuff well, and lesser cutters.. astatic and stuff..

Do it for sure! I blew a few fuse so far, glad to have them there.
Sorry to sound like a noob but what kind of fuse do i buy? As i am interested in doing this to my cutting head.
Could i just buy it at home depot?
wait wat
no no no, ur doing it wrong...
get a fuse holder for that type of fuse at radio shack... then splice it, or solder it to either wire on the head..
the wire wit da fuse plugs into the [ - ] terminal of the amp. doesn't matter wat wire u put the fuse on tho, until after you fuse da wire..

I do hear that young girls love the "rap" talk ... maybe if we use more "rap" talk we will get more gender equality on this forum.
Seriously, how many females are on here, participating? probably a topic for another thread....

i have got blown mine. it was h-4 audax.
the problem was that the support was holding on very old rubber. it just stopped cutter to vibrate. First I didn't knew that and gave too much power like you did.
rewinded by myself without any problem to 8 ohm's. changes the rubbers I had. The sound went up quite nicely but haven't tried after I got another cutterhead.
So there should be no big problems to fix it
p.s. when the coil burned it fired up the coil holder, so i had to do it from the scratch. took a sheet of glass textolite 0.2mm i think and with epoxy glues the holder.
