blank wrap [warp] problem with souri's disk

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

hi all,i use souri's transparent blank.
but i have wrap problem.

one side don't have problem.it looks flat.so it have low background noise.this side is ok.

but other side is obviously wrapped.it don't looks flat.
therefore there is big background noise in other side.

i suspected this is defect of blank.
because the blank was already wrapped before i use.
so i told to souri.but he say
"everybody can't use transparent disk.it is needed experience. sorry i can't make no more better blank".

can anybody tell me advice?
any help would be much appreciated!

thanks you.

maybe a stabilizer ring solves your problem with wrapped blanks

about the stabilizer ring,
I like the concept, but the design could be better, because as it is , it wont fit most turntables.
I can make one , that will fit 12" turntables , that have the same platter design, like the technics and stantons, ect...
I think it is a great alternative to the vacuum platter.

I don't mean to nit pick, but "warp" problem is what you're describing yeah?

I've had this as well, where one side is flat and the other is not.
people have said this is due to the nature of the way the sheet is extruded, but I'm not sure I believe that, it seems more to have to do with when it was cut into a circle.
I cut out my own blanks sometimes, and the cutting bit definitely heats up and melts the edges of the blanks.

the only info I've gotten to fix the issue is to put weight on the disc.

this ring is interesting for me.
but i'm worry that stylus may touch metal parts.
isn't there this problem?

The only time I've ever had Souri's blanks warp is when I've been rushing and trying to heat them too quickly. Sometimes when they're cold they stand a couple of mm or so from the platter, but with a couple of mins gentle heating they drop flat. Very occasionally they don't want to drop flat, so I flip them over & heat the other side. That usually solves the problem, but it really is rare that happens.

What thickness blank are you using? I've only ever used the 2mm transparent blanks and they were fine. I have a small pile of 1mm that I haven't touched yet and probably never will unless somebody asks for them.

What temperature is your cutting room? Are your blanks being stored somewhere much cooler than the ambient temperature of the cutting room?

I have found that Souri is overly aggressive with his guidelines for cutting. I would try cutting at a much lower surface temperature for the disc. No more than say 27 degrees celsius. Also, don't leave the lamp on the platter without a blank on it. The platter will get so hot over time that as soon as you put a blank on the platter, the blank will warp - making the blank unusable no matter how much surface heat you apply to try and make it flat again.

My two cents. Enjoy!

hi handcut.
i never rush in my case.i didnt 't any heat up.it had already wrapped.
i use 1mm transparent blank.i guess 1mm is more easy to wrap compare with 2mm.
temperature of my cutting room is around 25 degrees celsius.
cutting room and blank stock space is same room.

hi SUNBEARS.
thank you for post your knowledge.

>don't leave the lamp on the platter without a blank on it. The platter will get so hot over time that as soon as you put a blank on the platter, the blank will warp - making the blank unusable no matter how much surface heat you apply to try and make it flat again.
yes.all things i'm with you.

>No more than say 27 degrees celsius.
i learn this for the first time.
i will try with 27 degrees.
do you use heating(main unit)?

Warped blanks are nightmare. 50% of white other supplier's 12's are warped and unusable too. So, not only Souri's...

ok, im late, but i discover a metod to help you guys with it:

-take the mat on plate
-apply a gentle formula spray cleaner all over the mat
put the disk and gentle make it "glued"..
no disk warp, no woobles, you're done! ;)
it help me a lot with 1mm disk, never more i have jumps and woobles, try everything, this is my only way!

Oh no no, dont do that (sorry im late again, note recieve from mail)..

I justy use the oun souri surface denoiser.. like this:

-I use a sl1200mkII
-use a heavy plate to help the "inercia" who sabe a lot of wooble, but with warp or semi ondulated records, this still heard..
-so u usei this heavy plate and the souri's mat..
-i spray the surface denoiser on mat and put the blank, press on all the side of the plate, like if it get "glued"..
-the blank stay with no warp anymore, cut like a butter, without warps and my problems with wooble are completly gone..
-finish your cut, do the same on other side, cut, you're done..

I think is you make the same formula with water and dish soap, you have same results, the soap age lake a glue...

i try using glued spray, and make a mess, ruined my blank's, dont try that, use the surface denoiser.. im shure you'll F*** love it.. save all my problems..

I use a wet sheet of paper between disc and platter. Use destillated water.

Just get the bottom wet with something– water, liquid wax, etc. It will stick down by way of 'vacuum adhesion'.
