Re: Set of 5 Presto screws on eBay

If these are 8D screws, could they theoretically be compatible with a 6N overhead? Could you remove the ratchet and (again, theoretically) re-machine the ends to mate up with the drive pins, or are the screws a completely different size? I ask this since I put in a huge knee-jerk bid before I realiz...

Re: on ebay (sold) Presto K 10

Despite being banged up it is a K-10, so it's got a lot of functionality. It's also got the 5C advance ball set up for Out-In recording, and it comes with a rosy Transco stylus. Assuming everything works, it's on the high side, but still a fair price.

Re: Current production systems and turntable

There's nothing stopping you from fabricating a platter and drive specifically for use with a dub-cutter. Most people use stock turntables because it's the easiest solution.

On second examination, these might actually be Rek-O-Kut screws.

Heavy-Duty cutting amplifier on eBay

Hefty-looking thing. Missing a few tubes. Will probably need a solid overhaul.

Re: magnetic cutting heads for suitcase cutters?

My first successful cuts were made on a Recordio with an aftermarket M-41-8. They're decent heads, though not very powerful and with a limited range - still only up to 8kHz or so. I fried mine after sending waaay too much high end through it. https://soundcloud.com/electrospinner/wilcox-gay-record-l...

Re: dgmGrooveGraphics - Text/Image to Audio for Groove Art

I would love to give this a try once I get ahold of a higher LPI screw. At 112 I don't think you'd be able to make out much of anything.

It could be a tube going, or it could be dry caps. Has the amplifier been overhauled as well?

Re: Laser Cut Grooves... A Cutting Laser makes a record

It's a curse of mine to seek an analogue analogue to these kinds of things.

Laser reflected off of a high-precision mirror; mirror mounted at the fulcrum of a cantilever set in motion by a small voice coil. Such a rig might be mount-able to any existing lathe.

Re: ★★ Construct Neumann VMS 70 from scratch ★★

I agree with Opcode. If you are going to fabricate a mastering-grade lathe from scratch, it would be much easier to design a new one, based on the same general form as a Neumann lathe. I mean, they are awesome machines, but, they were all designed 40-plus years ago. Why copy them when you could be t...

Re: help design cutting head

I think most posters on the forum here have dabbled in building their own cutting or embossing head at one point. My first experiments involved gluing a sewing needle to the face of a small tweeter and attempting to emboss onto plastic sheet. I was not very successful, but I learned a lot from the p...

I'm not clear on how this would be used in the signal chain; as an EQ? If so, it would be a lot simpler to use something like a graphic EQ:

Re: Presto lathe value?

It's an interesting transitional lathe between the K-series and the 6-series. I would expect that if you put this up on eBay, you'd get bidding into the $300-$400 range. Local auctions aren't the best judge of going market prices.

Re: Presto lathe value?

The Presto D is a rare beast, indeed. I'd expect it to go for a price similar to the K-Series lathes.

Re: help design cutting head

Welcome! There are several examples of home-built stereo heads on the forums here. The most common way to construct one seems to be based on linking two small but powerful speakers to a torque bar which holds the cutting stylus.

Re: Presto lathe value?

It depends on the model and the condition, but in any case it is more valuable as a complete unit.
