Re: New RIAA Standard For Vinyl Records?

I have a feeling the technical brain trust at the major labels bought HD Vinyl hook line and sinker. They probably even gave them money. Suckers. It's the same thing every time someone comes up with an improvement in cutting technology. Playback must be improved to realize any benefit. Playback is t...

That will tell you is it's an open coil but an open coil isn't the only way it can break. Maybe the most common though. A dummy load is a better test because it eliminates the head.

If you use a dummy load and you get the right feedback signal then that points to the head.

Re: Phasing problem (Mastering)

If you picture a concert hall and the sound of an orchestra a +1 reading on a correlation meter would sound like all the sound is coming from the conductors podium. A single or mono point source. The contra basses are house right and first violins are house left. That’s stereo.

Re: Phasing problem (Mastering)

mischmerz - Yeah, well that's what I originally thought, but gold is probably right about what he said in last post. gold - I don't think you understand what i'm saying. If one pushrod is just a tiny bit slightly smaller than the other or something similar than I think that could cause phase issues...

Re: Phasing problem (Mastering)

If you have two identical signals that are 180º out of phase it's called reverse polarity and the signals will cancel. The meter would read all the way -1 and never move. If you have two signals that are identical and you sum them there will be a 6dB level increase. If you have two signals that are ...

Re: Phasing problem (Mastering)

There is nothing wrong with uncorrelated material. That is what stereo is. As long as there isn't so much vertical modulation that the record will skip it's no problem. The meter is not frequency sensitive so that reading could represent slightly uncorrelated audio anywhere in the frequency spectrum...

Re: HD Vinyl

How do you cut a reference copy? How do you check to see how the audio reacts to the format? Do you wait until a test pressing? That is crazy. Exactly. That's assuming it works at all. I can't help but thinking this second PR round means they blew through the original funding and need more to throw...

Re: A couple of VMS 70 Questions

Dietrich Schoenmann had some belts made up. He may still have some. He's a member here.

Check drawings AM66-930 and VMS66-931. Between those two drawings you should be able to chase the Cutterhead Lift around.

Re: Coming alive-VMS-70, Drive Rack and SP-272 Mastering Con

As long as you keep the level and high frequency content down it's no problem cutting without helium. For test cuts it shouldn't be a problem. Helium has gotten very expensive. You can purchase a tank and have it filled at a party supply store but I'd contact a welding gas supplier.

Neumann EW-68 Dummy Head

Up for sale is a rare EW-68 dummy head. This is not to be confused with the later EW-68a. The EW-68 mimics the impedance of the cutter head and can take a full 9dB of feedback. The later EW-68a is good for go-no go but can't take full feedback because it doesn't have the reactive components. $1750.0...

Re: Neumann VG66 Cutting Amplifiers

I built my career on a VG66. I could have switched to a SAL74 or Ortofon setup. I've beat many SAL74's in shootouts. Anything that is 40-50 years old and hasn't been gone over will not work properly. The VG66 takes some care in restoration. If you read the manual it spec's frequency response from 40...

SOLD: A80VU Preview Headblock for VMS80

These don't come up too often. Here is a 1/2" preview headblock that has been modified to be used with a VMS80 with a 0.5 revolution delay time. It could be put back to 0.6 revolution if necessary. I put the headblock on my A80 1/2" preview deck and both heads worked and calibrated up. Just the head...

Re: cutting direct from tape. advise needed for studerA80 de

I own three Studer A80VU preview machines. All 15/30 IPS. I have one set up for 1/4", one set up for 1/2" and a custom made one for 1" (2tr). The custom one was put together from an incomplete preview deck and a 1" deck for video layback. I know of at least ten Studer A80VU preview decks in North Am...

It sounds like you need a DDL. I don't know what is currently available. TC Electronics is a good place to check.

Re: Neumann console upgrade and replacements

If you want a four channel console your options are very limited. If you are willing to use a DDL then there are many more possibilities. Like a Maselec MTC-1X.

Would using a CNC router let you use G-Code for vari groove automation. There are lots of off the shelf solutions for that. Is G-Code up to the task?

Re: Shure SE20 Phono Preamp

Thanks JJ. I forgot to mention it is the same as a UREI 1122. I think the best thing about it is the +4 balanced output. There aren't too many phono preamps that can calibrate to a standard reference level and interface to a balanced +4 setup.
