Re: Digital Delay for VMS70 - Gauging Interest
What are the delay times for all cutting speeds i.e. 16 2/3, 33 1/3, 22.5, 39, 45 and 78 rpm I have included the half speeds for all 3 standard speeds I am curious as to what the delay times would be if you were using analogue or digital techniques. I assume the time will remain constant in either d...

Re: Presto 8dg refurb. (Lathe porn)
If the capacitors on the motor were 3.75uF then you need to replace them with the exact value of the motor will not synch correctly it was discussed recently on another forum. Pretty sure Mouser has the motor run capacitors as well. You may need to use more than one capacitor in series or parallel t...

Re: Marguerite Sound Studio (MSS) Lathe- For Sale
Steve/Soulbear, I'd like to have a look at and I also live in Manchester. I'd be more than happy to drive you over if all parties are happy with this. Always good to meet other trolls! Perhaps we can coordinate by PM? That sounds like a plan I can go any time except Friday and Monday, other commitm...

Re: Marguerite Sound Studio (MSS) Lathe- For Sale
Hi Stevie, Both motors look to be set to drive the Lathe Platter Rim, I figure speed selection is/was done via the first lever on the top-plate which selects drive from either the left-hand motor or the right-hand by a Huge (About 12in Diameter) cam arrangement under the Platter, which engages left...

Re: Marguerite Sound Studio (MSS) Lathe- For Sale
Hi Trolls, Included here are some of the Photos of my very recently acquired MSS Recording Lathe MSS Disc Lathe Photos2.pdf This Lathe is a Perfect basis for a restoration project, which was my intention when buying it for around £800. It is however much too large for my very modest home and I must...

Re: Presto 8dg refurb. (Lathe porn)
Those led lights would be useful if using a microscope as the light beam is focussed not diffused. I would imagine heat lamps fell out of use when heating the stylus became the standard as did diameter disc equalisation or compensation.

Re: Presto 8dg refurb. (Lathe porn)
Well, i mean, yeah of course! Keep with the era! But i thought it served a functional purpose aside from shedding light on the matter. I thought it served a dual purpose to provide light and to warm the material that you are going to cut. Depends very much on the type of lamp you intend to use. Wha...

Re: Steel-Stylus - noisy days
Hi, Have you tried to add heating to your cutting stylus. 4 or 5 turns of .005" nichrome wire close to the stylus tip driven by an adjustable AC or DC supply capable of 3-5 Volts at 1 amp should do the trick. See Todd's schematic for a simple to build setup. You would think that winding bare wire o...

Not currently but was going to rig something up that was akin to the angle poise lamp used on a Scully. For sheer coolness and completeness of the era of course.sameal wrote:Is anybody using an overhead lamp when cutting on these?

Re: Presto 8dg refurb. (Lathe porn)
Serious buisness though, with the vinyl uprising, lack of competition and bogen sleeping on presto this could be a niche opportunity. Plenty of information available to upgrade original design, and really, no huge players in the buisness to contend with plus independent developers are making intere...

Re: Deep Grooves Mastering - Project Bladerunner
Opcode66, do you plan to saw a slot across those aluminum forms, maybe on the side opposite the wire-start hole? It seems to me that such a massive shorted turn is going to waste a lot of your coil drive power as heat, whether the coil is moving or not. Regards -- KtG P.S. It's eddy current, not ed...

Re: Presto 8dg refurb. (Lathe porn)
I wished I had the original documents with my lathe to show what they were doing with it. It came from a studio in Boston that did a lot of work for Muzak back in the 1950s and 1960s and it was rumored to have had the Presto S1 stereo head mounted to it. I wished I got that cutter head too! L...

I couldn't find the patent by googling the number you mentioned, are you sure it's complete/correct? Does anyone have general information on these "Universal" machines? What is the full name of the company? Is it related to Bill Putnam / Universal Audio ? (I suppose not) It would be nice to collect...

I cam across this in my travels on the web: see attached file. It is meant for thorn replay needles but you could modify the project to cut steel styli for cutting or for those that wish to replay steel styli.

Re: Deep Grooves Mastering - Project Bladerunner
I learned to machine nylon bar stock today. I'm going to have a head to head comparison made between nylon and aluminum bobbins in 2 Presto 1D's. More to follow. Just an opinion the metal will alter the thermal dynamics of the cutter and may allow you cut at hotter levels. The nylon may melt and de...

Wow! That Bad Boy doesn't look 'stock'; someone has modified that one bigtime, or somebody at the factory did a 'special' for who-knows what. I guess you could cut outside-in and then reverse direction and cut inside-out... kinda like streetcar tracks that cross over one another. Twice the playing ...
