Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Hey everyone, made a new version cutterhead yesterday. I used perfume funnels this time and added ferrofluid to the drivers. I fucked up the aluminium torque tube, by not threading the hole for the setscrew properly I got the setscrew stuck inside. So I used a plastic one. Got a little distortion on...

Re: Vinylrecorder suction: vacuum or pump?

Keep an eye out on ebay for 2nd hand pumps. Got mine for a little over 100eur. Vac noise is really no fun

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

It was calculated using a sine wave log sweep wav file put trough the fabfilter correction EQ onto the record. sampled at 44khz 16 bit. Cutting level not very scientific but not far below burning 0.4A T fuses. It is not unthinkable I made a few errors during the process. Unfortunately no time to inv...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Found out that in the latest beta of Room EQ Wizard you can finally enter wav files instead of taking realtime measurements. So I did a few experiments and got a not so flattering THD plot out of it: THD KNOPRECONE.png Upwards of 3 Khz the THD goes way above 2% upto 18% at 10Khz. (Horizontal line is...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Hey everone. For the people interested here are the 3D files for the plastic parts of the cutterhead. Still working on the alu parts. I would advise to use a profesional SLS type service, not FDM home 3D printer. parts lists: 2x insert spirol series 16 m4 3x insert spirol series 16 m3 2x bolt WS 933...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Hello everyone! First of all best wishes for the new year. May it be a year of good health and lots of record cutting for all of you. I moved the lathe to my new studio and made a few upgrades. The lathe is now wall mounted with suspension blocks beneath. Redid the vacuum housing, its a lot smaller ...

Re: Hanoi Amator Project (HAP)

Hey not an expert but I'm using a rietschle vte8. It has a 133l/min max airflow and I run it at 80% speed most of the time. I do however use a lot of duct tape instead of 'real' connectors, so I guess I do have quite a few vacuum losses. My previous pump which did not work had a 118l/min airflow, bu...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

So I cut about 80 records with the the new cutterhead, the glued connections hold up well. Things I have learned: for some reason the fabfilter EQ did not match the curve completely, like the 4khz issue peak/dip, the response of the EQ was about 100-200hz off. Manual finetuning did seem to help a lo...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

The fans do not produce noise above the existing noisefloor at 5v. I'll leave them on for now... I will try some volume tests after I get through my current orders....

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

I checked on the visaton drivers but there is no easy acces to inbetween the coil and the gap to the center. Rebuit the head today, no budget for glue/brazing rods so same glue as before. Added some 40mm fans for some active cooling. Needs some rgb leds to go full casemod style. IMG_20171125_170234....

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

I use electronic music in testcuts for the sole reason it is my background in music and I know how it is supposed to sound. I did a lot of testing on the new head, the increase in main resonance did lower the efficiency of the head quite a bit. The 0,5A Fast fuses kept blowing, so I bypassed them. G...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Got the cutterhead back up and running, but now got a 3Db difference in volume between channels. Perhaps I did not glue accurately enough.

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Hi mark, i will try that tomorrow when i get some fresh stylii. While doing volume tests broke the cutterhead, one of the pushrod became decoupled from the torque tube, giving some nasty distortion. Did some extra gluing with epoxy, I hope it will be all good again tomorrow. So much for experimentin...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

cut stuff.png DId some more checking stuff. The notch at 3,4 Khz is way less when I took a spectrum from L and R, not the sum. I guess that means some phase issues???? Perhaps time to EQ both left and right channels seperately. Below you can see a chart of the cut spectrum vs original spectrum eg -...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

The EQ match was done using the white noise, afterwards I just load the song in the DAW with the white noise settings in fabfilter. I'm not really shure why it turn out bass shy, but I did got the feeling that in previous heads and EQ attempts fabfilter tended to do the same thing, but not always. I...
