Re: DIY vinyl with silicone molds and casting resin

Thanks for the thread, I've wanted to do this for a while since I heard about it. Your thread got me to looking and here's an interesting article that describes making your own pressure chamber along with pour techniques to get a high quality cast with few air bubbles. I think it applies to this typ...

It isn't Open Source, but the library that owns that copy must have an agreement with the copyright holder to host a scan of the book. I don't know anyone with one of these accounts that could obtain a full PDF of the book. Keep an eye on eBay, Amazon, and AbeBooks for copies, they seem fairly cheap...

SCAN - How To Make Good Recordings: The Complete.... [1942]

I recently saw an auction for this book on eBay as a soft cover and figured it was worth a look. Bought a copy from Amazon for $8 shipped. It can be found here and there at reasonable prices it seems, or free through the internet if you're okay with reading from your computer. There have been severa...

Re: Has anyone here ordered blanks from vinylblanks@gmail.co

You only have 45 days to file a claim through PayPal itself. If you used a credit card through PayPal you can contact your credit card company about a chargeback. The chargeback will go to PayPal who will in turn go after the seller. I haven't gone through a chargeback in a while so I don't know the...

Re: Nice Rek-O-Kut Imperial [on eBay]...

Why did it go for so much? There was another one listed with a spare amp BIN at $4000 that sold for $3500. Are these overhead RekoKuts really worth that much or am I missing something?

Re: Restoring a Presto 75a - Guidance/Advice/Questions

Some updates for those following along - Machinist checked out the platter. The platter is off by 44/1000 from flat on the top and 7/1000 on the rim (can't recall if he said it was out with or without the tire on it). One option is to shave the top of the platter, but that doesn't address the issue ...

Re: Restoring a Presto 75a - Guidance/Advice/Questions

definitely use a platter mat. I use a rubber mat on one 6N and a cork mat on the other. because I 'impress' rather than cut, the high heat from my lamps bend the cork mat up. the rubber one is unaffected. though it shouldn't be a problem if you're just cutting lacquers/etc Eventually I plan to do m...

Re: Restoring a Presto 75a - Guidance/Advice/Questions

Now that I know that know the head works, the platter is off to be looked at/straightened, and I know what material to use to replace in the "dash pot"; I plan to order some parts next week. Obviously Apollo is the only place to get a new stylus so I'll contact them about a current price. What about...

Re: Restoring a Presto 75a - Guidance/Advice/Questions

I took it of to take readings from inside the head for accuracy and to see if there was any damage. I took pics to show condition while I was at it. Despite lots of talk about the Presto heads, there aren't very many pictures of the insides that I have found so I thought I'd share as I go along. I t...

Re: Restoring a Presto 75a - Guidance/Advice/Questions

So, is this style of dashpot essentially a weight on the end of a rubber armature - a free-weight shock absorber? The way I understand it, yes. The picture just above shows the internal spring, like a leaf spring, with shock absorbing material on it. The vertical piece of metal in that same picture...

Re: Restoring a Presto 75a - Guidance/Advice/Questions

A few more pictures. Much thanks to markrob for helping me test my 1c, seems to work as it should. The rubber on the inside is nice and flexible so it doesn't look like I'll have to do much other than replace the external wiring. Below is the "dashpot" materials. I'll track down some strips to repla...

Re: Restoring a Presto 75a - Guidance/Advice/Questions

Hi, 2.3 ohms seems just about right for an 8 ohm head. You should be able to connect this to a standard audio amp and feed it some program material to check for vibration of the stylus. If you don't currently have one available for testing, insert the shank end of a 1/16" drill in place of the styl...

Re: Restoring a Presto 75a - Guidance/Advice/Questions

Thanks! I've been thinking about jumping into this as a hobby for a while, but know nothing about electronics. Bought the Basic Disc Mastering book off of eBay and have read some of it. I have a digital meter so on the 200 setting the readout includes tenths (.1). Last night I took the connectors of...

Restoring a Presto 75a - Guidance/Advice/Questions

Long time lurker, first time poster. Bought a Presto 75a a while ago and I'm starting the process of getting it back on it's legs. It didn't start off so well, the platter/main shaft was bent so I've shipped that off to my father who is a part time machinist to survey the possibility of straightenin...
