Re: Ortofon Network

Finally re-installed the original head connector per several of you folks' advice(s). Last year or so, I had to replace the old head connector cables whose jackets had somehow become dried out and cracked open in a few places. Coils survived, but repairing the cables was not possible since the gauge...

Re: Best stylus shape for playback of acetates?

Hi, The elliptical and the spherical tip are not being tested equivalently if their tracking forces are identical (as they are in the Woodward, Coutts, Levin test). The psi is greater with the smaller footprint, so the way to compare the two requires different respective tracking forces for the styl...

Re: Best stylus shape for playback of acetates?

There are all sorts of opinions on and conditions for what shape stylus makes a record sound good, but sphericals are said to wear out the grooves faster since they don't follow the chisel shaped groove as closely as the elliptical and shibata or nude/fine-line tips do, thereby skidding over tight c...

Here's a more irie picture of it, using the Kodak*. 2,5 mil deep grooves at 190 LPI going to lock-out. (Don't worry about all that Armstrong shag carpet. I have a freshly charged fire extinguisher on the wall.) (The [He] bottle (not shown) is strapped to the steel weldment of The Lathe using a high ...

Re: SP272 panel for donation to Lathe Trolls

Right on, Angus. That was the spirit of Albert Grundy, Z"l. The panel is going to a Grundy client, also, and I've been informed that the donation made to Lathe Trolls was above the asking. There has been a lot of generosity afoot in my own lathe journey. Torben Rønne gave me a DSS cutter hilt with s...

Not sure whom you're directing that to, boogie. The MossBoss has his own style of mirth. Besides, don't worry - I can't be laid off, fwiw, since I appear to have been grandfathered in (to this disc grandmothering thing). (L"

SP272 panel for donation to Lathe Trolls

It needs a lot of work to be used. Got it from Dietrich before I was sure what console I would use and whether I might need to harvest some buttons or switches. As it happens, I am fine using the console I made and don't need any of these parts... even though I do use the SP272 table and Ash butler ...

Re: Ortofon Network

Although the computer designed platter and furniture for the aluminum table and the well known high quality manufacturing (e.g., feedscrew that gets lapped for 40 hours by machine after the threads are cut) all contribute to the precision and lack of rumble, the sound is really the sound of the Orto...

Re: Ortofon Network

While using the camera, I nabbed this one of my dog, Meynard, resting next to the newly purposed lacquer blank humidor. I took the huge Iso-Box out of the cutting room after I replaced the chassis fans in the Ortofon amps with the high blowing Thermaltake DC fans that have a hydro-rotor. Having atte...

Re: Ortofon Network

New pictures of the process. On the last of the four cutting amps' Safety Circuit fine tuning. By now, I ran across an Ortofon 31-pin edge connector which makes for a much more convenient Impedance Board bypass connector. Someone had already jumpered two of the connections and had almost done that c...

Gotta groovy new idea for the name change proposal for this section of our cool lathe-knowledge forum: Making Stampers and Using Presses (tada!) Eveybody can understand what these gerunds mean. And there's no deliberate or inadvertent misspeaking entailed. After all, this isn't a section devoted to ...

The Vinyl Factory in Hayes?

(Please have them not plate your lacquers. IL: That is, the silver/dextrose coating should electrodeposit onto the Nickel and not the lacquer disc.)

Re: Metal work - plating

Hi Well Made Music, Indeed, I do think I know what he's looking for and that's why I worried that if he were to look up in a directory someone who says he does electroplating and/or galvanizing, unless that person were one of we few with the secret nick-name language of the profession on our immedia...

Re: Metal work - pulling to form

Hi CV, The chaps you seek are doing a trade which they will admit is actually called "electroforming." Chaps who do electroplating proper are not typically also able to electroform stampers, unless they are in the common practice of referring to what they do only as the ekename, "plating" - even tho...

Maybe one less button? Like the one at the top. Don't need the other one at the bottom?

That's what she might say....
