Re: question not about cutting
Do you have the board or its cadaver already that you want to clone? If it's not too damaged, you could unpack all the components and then scan the board to get (as much of) the track image (as possible). Then fill in the rest with an Intuous pen or similar (on screen, in software). Then reverse the...

Re: Don't plate
Chicken feet and worms are wrinkles in an electroform which are unwanted.
"Throwing power" is a measure of the electrochemical efficacy of the current density.
But the ions are not thrown. Rather, they get pulled.

Re: Don't plate
How about the term, Pulling? We can change the section name to Pulling and Pressing and keep the p-p alliteration whilst history-buffing the yester-conflation, rather than accepting it as a permanent howler on our trade(s). Why Pulling? Ions are pulled through the water. Some have called it throwing...

Re: Weiss EQ1-MK2 auction
Yeah, tough luck for Weiss. Actually, it went to Maui. I've only been to the big island of Hawai'i and the little island of Oahu. My dad lives in Haleiwa, Oahu, right next door to the guy who founded Mesa Boogie. Go figure. Anyone cutting sides in the 50th State? Favorite State Park? Pu'uhonua o'hon...

Re: 100% correct stylus heating
I think what Nickou was might have been alluding to was an increase in Gaussian noise or hiss with the diameter effects of the spiral's speed you describe, Tim E. There is a distortion in treble loss, but are there also added sidebands when we speak of the noise? Self-erasure doesn't forcibly imply ...

I read that the Audiodiscs were supposed to be stored at 50% RH. I suppose Apollos and Transcos would be similar in need of humid environs?

Re: Heating your cutting needle
I've always wanted to install a transistor in my lathe to keep the stylus heat current from flowing if the vacuum is not on. Someday I'll do that.... All's you need is a microswitch that is switched by the movement of the head drop. (The green and white jacketed wires go to the microswitch for styl...

Re: 100% correct stylus heating
Hi Andreas, The Westrex manual indicates that the power required for heating the Westrex heated stylus (P9843-1) is ~6V (AC or DC) at ~0,5 Amperes. So, 3 Watts for the name brand Westrex. In fact, they say one can substitute this heater for a home made one which uses a 5 mils dia. NiChrome (32 Ohms ...

Re: Depth half width q
HI Tim, I have that book here, and I think you're onto something. Those do look like depth numbers, rather than width numbers, and they are certainly used for groove depth calibration with a known GPI. ... But the numbers with the 90-degree included I've used and seen in the other Scully field bulle...

Re: Chip suction system clogging on brand-new blanks?
Presto without "chango." That's some nice imperviousness. I've envied the Westrex's lack of need for Helium. The 90-degree sounds good if the proximity is good. But I think everyone from Scully to MossBoss have suggested that the ultimate shape for the nozzle should be that of a flattened oval so th...

Re: Chip suction system clogging on brand-new blanks?
It's quite interesting that the vintage blanks aren't dropping chip when using the same technique on the new blanks does cause it to drop. What are the numbers 60V/7W referring to? The cutting level is usually defined in terms of the velocity or possibly acceleration. Velocity, in cm/sec, and accele...

Re: Ortofon Network
More photos now available. The box resistor is a God send for its ability to allow the user to sweep through a broad range of values while fine-tuning a circuit. The Ortofon Safety Circuit, and many other cards, have tuning resistors that have to have the values determined for the amp the card is in...

Re: RIP Tom Dillander of Palomino Record Pressing...
Ghastly either way. Here's how the initial story in the local news read, "SHEPHERDSVILLE - A cap blown off a boiler left a local business owner in critical condition." Although not a fiery explosion, this now sounds more like a mechanical explosion of pressure which is any rupture caused by pressure...

Thanks, MossBoss. Not many use Ortofon, here, but they are quite easy to work on. Everything tidily assembled with plenty of space for hands. I was glad I took the time to calibrate the safety circuits, myself, even though I ordered the back-up system "already checked out and serviced, as needed, by...

By the way, *L* I recommend any who have loud fans to look into Thermaltake. The model I got of theirs blows a little harder CFM than the original P_bs_ 4800X, and they are 16 dB instead of 32. Over 2 1/2 times quieter. Whether one, or all three (two amps plus one dual-psu = 3 fans...). Now on all t...

Re: RIP Tom Dillander of Palomino Record Pressing...
We are still in shock over the news of this sudden loss of a record-making veteran. Re: Chip suction system clogging on brand-new blanks?
That's one way to tune the heat. The method I was alluding to (which is widely used) involves cutting unmodulated grooves and listening to the pickup (riding the just-cut groove) cranked up loud enough to hear the Gaussian hiss. When the heat is increased above the minimum setting there will usually...

Re: Chip suction system clogging on brand-new blanks?
Have you tuned the heat by ear with the new blank? Cool chip might be heavier since it is not yet as vaporized as hot string. If there is a lot of out of phase when you get to the 6 minute point, there might be some depth angle obstruction in case the position of the nozzle is not ideal. Since you a...
