I don't know. I'd love to have one but I've never managed to snag one on Ebay. It can't be too complicated of a device.

Live and learn - Thanks for the education. It seems odd that such a machine would be provided with a crystal cutter. Are there different grades of crystal cutters, or would you expect all them to perform in a way similar to a Wilcox Gay, etc.. ? In Robert Morrison's book, he touches on the subject o...

Yeah I noticed the crystal cutter, but aside from that , the machine is still a beauty, and considering what other units have sold for recently, the selling price of this unit doesn't surprise me.

That's interesting to consider also. I haven't done live recording with a microphone yet. That will be my next attempt.

No wonder sound technology continues to fascinate me. Thanks for the comments. Also, consider that my cutter is not a piece of professional equipment, and the instructions consist of about 4 paragraphs aimed at Joe Average. The all encompassing statement, "Practice will determine proper adjustment" ...

:D That makes sense. Thanks! Learn something new every day. The needle is a little sluggish compared to today's meters. Still, I wonder why piano was mentioned and not all percussion in general. Not many drum solos in 1940?

My success with this cutter is relatively recent. I sometimes use a computer program to compress, and/or EQ before I cut, sometimes I just go straight to the cutter. My question is more about why the instructions for a cutter circa 1940 would specify that a piano should be treated differently than a...

VU Levels for Piano Music

I have a portable RCA MI12701with a magnetic cutter head and built in electronics, very similar to the Presto K series. I'm getting great results thanks to the advice of the Lathe Trollers. Thanks again. The instructions state that the VU meter should swing into the green during average recording pa...

I think it probably is a 1-C or 1-D. The brass color covers the name plate and lettering as if someone simply spray painted the cover gold. Maybe that's why the model number is not showing thru clearly. Also, the color is wearing off in spots showing the original silver underneath. Does anyone have ...

I'm more curious about how it got away for that price. Seems uncharacteristically low compared to what we've seen lately.

The flat part of the shank will face the front of the head, so the set screw will come in contact with the flat and hold it in position.

I was probably trying to use a steel needle. I have a saphire short shank. I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the education.
