I actually have 3 stampers for 45s, but not sure if I'm interested in selling. I could possibly sell one of them though, a doo-wop number called "Suddenly". The other 2 which I am soon going to experiment with Smooth-On Task 4, are Mahalia Jackson's "His Eye is On the Sparrow" and Screamin' 'Jay' Ha...

Optical-fibre turntable (record player)

I just found this youtube clip about a turntable that plays records with an optical fiber. It looks like it is not a laser turntable, but operates on a similar principal, but the impression I get is that a fiber rides in the groove (or hovers over it?). It claims to be able to play both discs and cy...

Did I understand correctly that this exact same machine had been used by EMI and Columbia and both Beatles' albums Let it Be and Abbey Road were cut with it? Cool! What about Pink Floyd's More and Ummagumma, perhaps?

movies with a cutting lathe

While technically it's a TV series and not a "movie", I'm pretty sure I saw an episode of HBO's "Carnivale" where Tommy Dolan (I think it was) used a portable record cutter. I'm not sure exactly what episode, but it was somewhere around here: http://www.hbo.com/carnivale/episode/season1/episode07.sh...

Soundsheets/Flexis

Several years ago I saw auctions on ebay containing mastering equipment, including a lathe (probably a Scully) that had been used by Evatone Soundsheets in Clearwater, Florida. Very nice looking stuff. There had also been at least one manufacturer of flexi-discs in Europe. I would search all over Eu...

What sort of Real Estate is needed to operate a cutter?

You wouldn't house & operate a Presto or Scully lathe in just any room, would you? What kind of shop environment do any of you recommend? Is your space similar to a metal-working shop? Do you need a fireproof environment, due to the heating elements and the highly flammable chip? Also, does a vacuum...

I would be interested in a few blanks containing silent grooves, for embossing. Other embossing systems had been tried going back to at least the 1930s. I have a few embossed steel or aluminum metal records from ca. 1933 (they look like stampers). There isn't much that can be heard from playing them...

This is very useful information. In the very early 70s my first turntable was a crappy Garrard with a heavy ceramic cartridge. I experienced exactly as you described Bob, that many 45s would shred quickly. It's interesting to finally find out the name of the material that these were made of (styrene...

I do not have a cutter yet, but would be interested in purchasing some blanks anyway, but am in no hurry right now. I can use them either for experimentation or even as being collectible, plus I may know others who might be interested in purchasing a few. If, and whenever, you need more buyers, let ...

copying record with Smooth-On plastic molding

This video shows how a large double-sided coin is copied: http://www.smooth-on.com/index.php?cPath=2_1113_1136 Would it be possible to use this same method for copying a record, extending the molding process out to accomodate a 7", 10", or 12" record? Is it necessary to use "Task 4" plastic for the ...

tinfoil phonograph, and where to find the tinfoil

A friend has a reproduction tinfoil phono. The grooves on the mandrel of the reproduction model do not seem to be as deep. We are looking for tinfoil that might fit on the machine. Where would you find thick tinfoil? What kind of tinfoil did Edison use? Aluminum foil is not the same and much too thi...

early personal experiments

I did some experiments when I was around 14. I had a lo-fi Garrard ceramic-cartridge turntable, which was hard on records, the weight was heavy and the needle ruined good records. I had some flexis with blank sides and a 16-RPM record my granddad got from a blind society which has 30 seconds of sile...
