Re: counter spring and the groove WPI
I think he is asking how much weight should a cutting stylus / advance ball apply to the disc. it's funny, but i don't think there's something out the like an "optimal tracking(cutting) force" when it comes to cutterheads. I'd like to be wrong on this one, but has anyone seen something like an appli...

Re: Why floating?
I'm not very clever explaining in English, but I try to give it a go: Second reason is that advanced ball tend to leave scruff marks on the lacquer (in the manual it says that the Westrex 3DII cutterhead should rest on the lacquer with 2 oz (56.69grams) when using the advanced ball assembly) . Espe...

... CD4 cutter is well versed on the subject ... CD4 cutter is working on his PhD in electromagnetism, last I was told. He is also busy restoring some cool lathes. One is the VMS80, which he told me is programmed with land, rather than LPI. Also he mentioned its having the ability, like the Sontec ...

Ok- This is impossible to do for 2 reasons. 1. Cutting: Simply reversing the feed screw at the "turnaround point" would result in eminant overcut of the outside-in part of the groove. One would need to reverse the direction of the platter at the same exact time, and turn the stylus around 180 to me...

it is possible. difficult but possible. it can be done on a scully, but it's very difficult. lot's of luck involved. while cutting, you can switch to the inside-out feed screw. problem is that when you disengage, you have a moment where the carriage is left to travel free. at that point you can easi...

That's what Al Grundy told me. Straight from his lips to my ears. I was video taping the session. I can post the video clip with him saying this. Debate it with him. Neumann was not involved in the developement of the RIAA EQ Curve. And a lot of other cutterheads at the time had their resonant freq...

hei if you talk about levels. please...never talk about db's and please stay in english otherwise i start posting in "swiss german" or swahili +2 +6 whatever. dB is relative. so tell us +6 dB's at 7cm/s reference level. for example flo is right. +2VU = +6db or whatever... with no reference to a rec...

Hey Leo, if you have all the answers, why don't you post them? It would be more helpful to our readers than simply saying "you're wrong opcode66". I'm not missleading anybody. I see that you get defensive very easy. emotions out, where are you going exactly with the main resonance freq of the sx-74...

The topic was on Maximization. Someone else starting talking about banded compression. I chimed in saying watch your highs. And, the reason why is twofold: res freq and riaa. You don't want to give too much energy to the upper high end sustained or you'll smoke your head. Also, you can capture a cl...

1K is the resonant frequency of the SX74. With the SAL rack's RIAA pre-emphasis that starts at 1K and goes up as the freqeuncy increases. Yes, really. The highs get excited by this system. A number of older mono cutterheads had a resonant frequency that was higher than 1K. Read your AES anthology. ...
