Re: Project : Diamond stylus for lacquers

JVC stopped because CD's started to happen and there were hellish problems with the heater wires. Diamond is a poor conductor of heat and we had to use 0.7 amp minimum to get a quiet cut, Over time the wires weakened and split. The most time we ever got was 35 hours before this happened. Probably sh...

Re: New Pressing plants

So, a third manufacturer of lacquers in Italy. Great news! Now if only someone would try their hand at making pure corundum cutting styli, that would be brilliant!

There's a bit of a monopoly both with blanks and styli at the moment....... 8)

Re: Digital vs Analog Masters

The industry at large adopted digital, mostly PCM 1630, from the late 80's. See Aussie0zborn's excellent post. All the engineers at the studio I worked in loved it. As I remember, it solved more problems than it created, until the 'loudness war' reared it's ugly head. This probably accounts for the ...

Re: How does a mother record sounds?

Well, if you can even fit it on your turntable and get it to lie flat, it sounds virtually identical to the finished pressing. In the old days, this was played back, checked and any ticks and pops were noted. Being nickel, it will wear out your stylus pretty quickly, so styli for this purpose were re...

Re: Transco Lacquers and Styli

Using MDC 14's and Transco 320's here. I've noticed the last couple of styli have cleaned up after about 2-3 hours. They are quiet, sound good and last about 40 hours with little facet wear. I don't wear them in with no heat though. If it works for you however................ Use Apollo 12in masters...

Re: GZ Vinyl in the Czech Republic

Well George, let me begin by saying that we send out hundreds of lacquers to all the UK and European pressing plants. I have never had any serious problem with any of them. Sure, occasionally one will tell you that it was scratched or damaged in some way when received,it's impossible to tell how it ...

Re: Transco Lacquers and Styli

The current batch of MDC's look fine with Transco styli. Very quiet with smooth walls. MDC's are softer than transco lacs and seem to use a different dye in the formulation. I recently got 30 hrs on a 320 using a mixture of mdc's and t'co's (about 70/30%) I know they are difficult to source in the U...
