Re: plastic plate embossing
thanks for the reply. so i just tried embossing on the picnic plate and it sounded bad.
no matter what i tried ( adjusting angle, weight) i got bad results.
i am using a Presto K8 with the Tungsten shanks from Ebay.
i will stick to embossing on polycarbonate since i have my rig dialed in for that.

Re: plastic plate embossing
thats some awesome results for embossing on plastic plates.
i have been using polycarbonate but i will have to try it out on the plates.
any tips or how to get it dialed in?
i figure you gotta angle it back?

Re: Question .. riding cutter head?
Cutting heads usually have a “Advance Ball” which is mounted in front of the cutting needle.
It is mounted slightly in front of the shank and rides on the laquer or what ever medium you are cutting on. It keeps the Shank at a constant depth from small warps in the medium you are cutting.

on my presto 6n i have the spring weight maxed out giving it all the wieght on my shank. i am using the tungsten ones from ebay. i also got it as angled as i could with the head at the bottom of the mount. i uploaded some pictures of my cutting head angle and spring weight. i am using a Fairchild 54...

Re: New Project- Presto 14B / Caruso
try putting more weight on the cutting head. Then you will have some deeper grooves for the needle to ride on. Also you can try pulling the cutting shank out the head a bit to so you can angle the head and also give the needle more weight. Also have you put a fuse inline with the cutting head and am...

Re: Can Anybody Tell Me Whats Going On Here? (Pics Included)
its kinda hard to tell from the picture. What does it sound like when the play back needle plays those spots? If it starts to skip then I would think that you have the recording levels too high and the grooves are clashing. Also have you tried cutting other records? Does it always happen in the same...

Re: Diamond cut records not that loud
im sure you should be able to get louder cuts out of your head especially if you got a fuse inline protecting your cutting head. For me I usually set my levels to the point where the fuse blows out and then replace it with a fresh one and back the volume down till the fuse does not blow. From there ...

Re: Building an embossing system: Need a stylus heater or no
I use a heat lamp bulb from Home depot to heat my polycarbonate.
I mounted it on my Presto 6n
I usually have it on while the turntable is rotating to prevent the bulb concentrating on one piece of the plastic.
So far it seems to heat up the plastic pretty well.

Thanks for sharing! Thats a awesome diy setup you got.
Also the lathe sounds nice!
Just a question.
Do you apply compression to all the material being embossed?
I am looking into getting a hardware compressor for my setup

Re: 320 style embossing cones?
I will try out a old sapphire needle backwards technique and see if i can get good results. I have been having really good results with the tungsten cones on my fairchild head so i was thinking if i could modify the tungsten cone to somehow mount on a cutting head (Neumann mono head) with a 320 styl...

Re: direct to disc
Thats cool!
I do the same thing kind of.
I just run my music into a mackie mixer which goes into a amp which connected to the cutting head.
Heres a clip of some live cutting to disc :
