Re: Has anyone made metal from a PC dub cut yet?

Thanks for your speedy reply MossBoss. When you used the vacuum process was that with wax masters? I'm sure you are correct that plastic is inferior to lacquer. Other than Dynavac some other names of high quality vacuum gear that pop up on ebay are Edwards (UK brand) and Varian (US brand). There are...

Re: Has anyone made metal from a PC dub cut yet?

There is a process of coating plastic using vacuum evaporation. I understand this was also used for the wax masters that were originally used for record production. Some YouTube vids on early record making show this coating step... for wax. I haven't seen this process used for making a stamper from ...

WTB: Lathe in Australia

Hi I am looking to buy a recording lathe. Ideally it would be located in Sydney or at least NSW. Some other preferences are: - Would prefer a professional unit even if very old. Australian units like AWA etc would be ideal. - Cutting heads and amplifiers are not required however I understand they ma...

Hi opcode66, yes I think I have suitable equipment for doing the faceting. Any tips though are greatly appreciated! It may save a lot of trial and error! Re: Experiment with homemade sapphire stylus...some pics.

It was very easy. I drilled the sapphire boule with a diamond tipped core drill. (of course the boule is just submerged in a shallow dish of water). The core ends up inside the drill bit. I then remove the bit from the drill and push the core out. Despite many attempts I can only get 2mm length cores...

Homemade stylus. Cut from synthetic blue sapphire. Now I need to get the tip right!

Dimensions are approx 2mm long and 1mm diameter.

Re: Orotofon DS522 cutterhead questions

Thanks Powerstrip, great photos! I didn't realise that I would need to remove the rubber to change the stylus. I also hadn't realised that the stylus would have a square/rectangular section. I thought it would be a cylinder with 0.75mm diameter. If I find some photos of the tool I'll let you know. I...

Re: Ortofon DS522 Styli Wanted

Hi

I understand that the sapphire stylus for the DS522 has a length of 4 mm, cylindrical shaft. The diameter of the shaft is specified to be between 0.75 mm and 0.73 mm.

Does anyone have a photo/drawing of the collet used to hold the sapphire? I think mine is missing.

Re: Unreadable archives in the years to come (LA Times)

Steve, thanks, that is a thought provoking article.

Recently I had to dispose of some obsolete CD-R's. I was surprised how some of them had become very brittle. Others were starting to "flake" and lose the dye. I guess they were only 10-15 years old.

Re: Orotofon DS522 cutterhead questions

Thanks, you were correct! Using a multimeter I checked the resistances. The pins in the bakelite connector are for the stylus heating. The two pins further away from the black connection are around 65 Ohms....feedback coils. The furthers away are around 10 Ohms...I guess the cutter coil. http://s8.p...
