Weird LP cylinder format made by Kenner Toy Company of Cincinnati

In the late 1960s through early 1970s (1967-1972), the Kenner Toy Company of Cincinnati came up with an unusual format using a cylinder that revolved at 33 1/3 RPM and cut the same way as a standard disc LP. It contained anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes of music per cylinder, with spacing to indicate ...

Re: Wilcox Gay Recorordio vs Meissner 9-1065

I only have experience with the Meissner. It's difficult to get the cutting head to cut with nice clear signal. It seemed to work well once or twice after repairs, but after that the volume seems to be a bit too low, and you're taking a risk if you crank up the volume since at some point it can be ...

Re: Pledge drive. Goal: FREE THE BLOG, by raising $1500.

I just came in here, it looks like, 7 months later. What is the tally so far? Are you still raising the $1500? Did you think of doing a crowdsourcing fundraiser? Those who donate a certain amount should be entitled to a one-off record (dubplate/lacquer/polycarbonate/etc.).

Re: MAKING A DISC QUALITY RECORDING ON AN EDISON WAX CYLINDE

Also, it's interesting to note that all cylinder phonographs have lathes, and it's possible to record on any of them with the proper recording stylus and blank wax cylinders (although not all of them will have good results). Edison was right in that the cylinder was a more correct format than disc b...

Re: ghost grooves

I have aluminum discs (with recordings) from the 1930s. Apparently they were embossed as well, as you can hear the ghosting sounds between grooves if the stylus is not riding in a groove. The land between the grooves is not flat on these either, so, to play them, the playback stylus must be properly...

Re: Laser Cut Grooves... A Cutting Laser makes a record

The experimenters who are attempting to create a record cutter/lathe/recorder that cuts a groove with a laser, while researching for the best method for transferring a WAVe file to a properly cut phonograph groove, it might help to study a properly-scanned/digitized phonograph groove. To scan/digiti...

Re: Meissner...

I just got my repaired Meissner back from Gib. The repair took some time and effort (along with figuring out an appropriate payment method), but was worth it. Gib added a modern phono plug, so it's possible to hook in any modern audio device. I'm not sure how much longer he'll be repairing these.

This may be a good or a bad idea, but.... A porcelain or rubber silicone mold would enable anyone to make multiple chocolate records, even non-lathe-trollers. It would be possible to sell such molds with instructions on how to pour the chocolate for making records. There's also the risk of giving aw...

Your chocolate record from a stamper is really cool. Would it be possible to create a porcelain mold, from a metal mother? Whereby the porcelain mold would be a negative, like a stamper, into which you could pour chocolate, to make a chocolate record. Then again, would porcelain be able to support g...

Incidentally, I have learned that Peter King has gotten the costs of production way down using these methods: He makes his own cutting stylii out of cheap steel gramophone playback stylii - which can be found for, like, 2-cents each, using his own grinding machines to grind the stylus before cutting...

Another way to solve the 4-minute issue is to take a cutting head (normally used for discs) and fit it into a cylinder machine for cutting cylinders. *Then* you could vary the depth of the groove to cut any size groove and should be able to create a "4-minute" cylinder groove that way. I am not sure...

Peter Dilg is well-known for cutting 2-minute cylinders. Everyone I've asked say there doesn't exist a 4-minute cutting stylus. It seems to me that a jewel cutter could just make one. Right? I don't know anything about cylinders, but I'm guessing that all playback styli for cylinders are setup to p...

new shellac disks, anyone?

Has anyone yet found a pressing plant that can press actual shellac discs? This came up here a few years before, where a musician would like to have records made that can be played on handcranking gramophones and victrolas. What would it take for a pressing plant to substitute shellac material in pl...
