Re: Request for ultrasonic cutting

Hi Thomas: maybe one could try this: https://www.piceramic.de/de/produkte/piezokeramische-komponenten/rohre They can manufacture those ceramic tubes in small dimensions and with different configurations of the elektrodes. Ceramics are stiff and lightweight. A possible direct replacement of the origi...

Re: Request for ultrasonic cutting

post scriptum: How can it be done in plastics, e.g. PC etc.? The amount of friction in plastics is not high enough to generate the ultrasonic oscillation of the torque tube, regardless of its dimensions. However, a solution could be to replace the torque tube with a piezo actuator that is electrical...

Re: Request for ultrasonic cutting

Hi Thomas, the "squeeking" is a result of " the cutter head as it was dragged through the copper disc". (https://en-academic.com/dic.nsf/enwiki/11064174) How the squeeking ist "controlled": Afaik this is like scratching with chalk on a blackboard, which normally gives some HF-noise of undefined /uns...

Re: DMM questions

Well, if the drawing is to scale, the dimensions of the soundbox are quite impressive and might be in the region of the diameter of the record. They propose a thickness of the diaphragm of 2mm and up. Of course that makes sense in the case of cutting into metal. Is it cutting or embossing? In the 19...

Re: DMM questions

I had some interesting conversations about the implementation of DMM with several mastering engineers and how those using it today are not adhering to the original specifications that were required to obtain a formal DMM license. Hi Rene, I'm wondering if any of them would be willing to share with ...

Re: DMM questions

Some experts claim that the supersonic excitation is not really necessary, but an unwanted side effect while cutting into metal. They assume that Redlich was smart enough to make this essentially undesirable effect part of the Teldec patent. Others say that it generally doesn't work without superson...

Re: DMM questions

Hi Rene, this ist the basic patent concerning DMM from early 80´s. Sorry, it is in german language. It deals about all the details, esp. the interdependence between hardness of the copper-blanc and excitation of the supersonic frequency which facilitates the cutting process. Best redards, Martin DMM...

Hello SueDenim, there it is again: different members, different sources, but the same finds / content. Didn't see your post then. The main thing imho is to keep those informations "viral" and accessible to everyone!
Many thanks!

Re: Lacquer formulae II

Hi Martina, Extruders are rarely found in cellars and just as rarely used - mostly not affordable even then. For the first experiments on a laboratory scale, simply build it yourself, see the diy links on youtube. Isn't rocket science... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2W2TWR4ucA https://www.youtub...

Re: Lacquer formulae II

Hi, sounds good! Main thing is about getting a proper and smooth (polished) surface on those polymers - so the demand of proper and flawless coating of a carrier substrate - be it aluminum or glass- gives us the same problems as in the production of traditional lacqers. Sputtering on wax targets was...

Re: Lacquer formulae II

In my opinion, the core problem with lacqer blancs will not be solved in the near future - if only 1 or 2 manufacturers remain who will sooner or later will have to withdraw from the market as well due to economic and environmetal considerations. After that nobody else would take the risk of foundin...

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN CYLINDER AUDIO PRESERVATION

Hi folks! While I was doing some research about laser techniques, I came across this on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OfowgD4CT0 About 1:04:36 they come to the point: Recording phonograph cylinders made of polycarbonate - as reference recording. Using a westrex head, they put M.J. into t...

Re: Weird issue: Noise along with the signal

Hello Fer, sounds like an intermodulation effect to me. Is the amplifier o.k .; do you use a feedback cutting head? A more precise assessment is only possible through a measurement. Get an audio spectrum analyzer (many sound cards / audio software can do that today). Record a 1000Hz tone and see whi...

Recently found the basic patents of Teldec´s DMM, including detailed information about the ultrasonic biased cutting process and electroplating details concerning the copper masters:
US Patent 4248438
US Patent 4484320
Both easily accessible on www / google

Re: cutting both dmm & lacquers with one VMS70?

Some of the DMM lathes were also converted back to lacquer cutting lathes. Who knows where those left over dmm parts went… To my knowledge, Dmm has a hi frequency carrier, different suspension box, head, vacuum system, amp calibration etc etc… unless there would be a purpose built dual lacquer/dmm c...
