Re: Xray : a new post

Thanks yes I'll increase the weight slightly. The same weight is OK with myshank blanks, the lowest I can have with myshank blanks. But myshank blanks maybe softer. And yes with even less weight and myshank blanks the swarf is too light to go up the tube and gets in a tangle. The xray dropped swarf ...

Xray : a new post

Hello all I have been reading past posts about cutting xrays and noticed there hasn't been any recent ones. I am attempting to cut on xray. They are old xrays from at least 25 years ago. I am using a myshank diamond; previous post suggested that this worked. I am of course a bit worried that I will ...

Re: stylus heat

HI
Thanks both of you. Of course it is now my brain is slightly more awake. I have an ammeter in my box that broke a few years that was connected in series. Since then I have bypassed it and have been measuring it wrong. and not giving it enough power. buying a new ammeter.

stylus heat

Hello I have been cutting with an MSS mono lathe using myshank diamond for about 6 years. I just wanted to check something about stylus heat, make sure i have been doing it right these years. My diamond is getting half way through its life and there is a little bit of surface noise, so i thought I'd...

Re: Styro-Fail (Recycled Styrene Recording Blanks?)

Hi Kat,
Great, lets us know how the cuts go and good luck with your new Presto K8, and buying the rest of the gear. Good to know that you think polypropylene seems to be the best option

Re: polyethylene / polypropylene blanks

Hi, There is no need to make them round. Especially for testing. Just cut them as squares with whatever means you have and drill a hole. Mark Yes good idea. I used to order polycarbonate squares for embossing because they were cheaper. Pre cutting on myshank blanks. I think I still have the 7.3mm d...

Re: polyethylene / polypropylene blanks

All plastics are recyclable and if you’re not going to eat it, it’s not toxic. If you want to be environmentally friendly it might be best to find another hobby and make yourself useful by collecting plastic from the beach. I think pvc , because of the chloride is very toxic when being recycled. An...

Re: Overhead thought

Hi Mark. That's great to know, thanks. Ill look up metal lathes and also the parts. See if there is a UK equivalent to Little Machine shop. I love my MSS lathe , but keep thinking of building one.

Overhead thought

Hello all. Just a thought, but has anyone DIY inclined, ever made an overhead out of a wood lathe? or something similar? They obviously have similarities, but they might not be compatible. I've not looked at a wood lathe up close. when you search for record lathe it often comes up with a company cal...

Re: polyethylene / polypropylene blanks

Hi I know it's been years but did you or anyone else get anywhere with propylene blanks? I am really interested in the possibility of a more environmentally friendly blank. And also other new plastics that are as good as PVC.

Hi.
This thread is amazing! Did you get anywhere with the polypropylene? Let us know if you have any new developments. I'd love to be able cut with recycled non pvc blanks.
Best wishes

Re: stylus heating question (plastic)

Hi Sorry if a bit late to the party: I cut with myshank diamond and blanks. I don't go over 30 degrees as the swarf goes sticky. Usually about 27 and with stylus heat up to 0.3 A. Especially as the stylus wears down a bit. As start getting a bit of surface noise. I have found it a problem with swarf...

Re: sources of surface noise? (vinyl recorder)

After trouble shooting im wondering if the \scraping' sound is due to platter wobble, I have noticed a little more movement in my 1200 platter this week so sending to for full service, will see if that eliminates the noise. When trouble shooting I max'd the recording gain and realised that the scra...

Hi. A but late to the conversation but hyaenamx I listened to your sound clip and I have the same high pitched noise. My tube is very close to the stylus so that could be the problem. I will try like you without suction to see if it's better

Thank you

What Anti static spray

Hello there trolls. I have been cutting for 4 years with an MSS mono lathe, with myshank diamonds and blanks. I have used various anti static sprays, mainly Staticide and my favorite Turtle wax: Wax and dry. But you can only get Turtle wax: Wax and dry in the USA, so getting it is tricky. ( I am in ...
