I have increased the weight of the head and added a heating lamp resulting in a deeper groove. I have now cut my first record without skipping issues!
I do suspect vertical bouncing has increased somewhat but for now that does not present a significant problem.

Thanks Aussie0zborn. I have a USB microscope on order so hopefully that will shed some light on the depth.
