Re: Presto 6N face lift

Wow, really nice! Looks like a great summer project! Tell me, what did you use to strip the old paint? And to clean everything? It looks like you got years worth of grime off so easily - even the texturing in the knobs looks clean! I for one would be interested in hearing a bit more about your resto...

Re: Need to value an ROK M-5S 240 LPI leadscrew

Just the leadscrew is damaged, so yes - that might absolutely be an option. I'm calling the lathe with the spiraling crank the M5S, although the badging is identical (Master Pro M5) to a non-crank M5. I got both types in a bulk lot, and it's baffling why any company would mark them identically when ...

Re: Need to value an ROK M-5S 240 LPI leadscrew

FYI that small gear is pretty much identical to a common gear used in RC car racing - 36 tooth, 48 pitch. You'd need to mill it out to fit, but at least the base cost is less than $10 for that type of gear. But the big gear, and the clutch mechanism is not going to be trivial. I don't doubt it's a b...

Re: Need to value an ROK M-5S 240 LPI leadscrew

Thanks, guys. I was also thinking in the $300-400 range for this model, so that's reassuring. Petermontg - when you say you can get screws made for 100 Euro, is that just cutting the thread, or does it include the one-way gear the M5S uses for manual advance? I took one apart, and while the guts wer...

Need to value an ROK M-5S 240 LPI leadscrew

Hi, I got a damaged leadscrew delivered with a M5 purchase, and seller wants to make an insurance claim. It's 240 LPI (with the clutch mechanism) which I was told is rare - I honestly don't know. If there is a stable market for these items, could anyone estimate how much it would cost me to replace ...

Re: Horizontal striations in groove

Yep, I did some hoppin around and side pushing to make sure the playback stylus wasn't riding in the lands - I got a pretty bleepy/screechy version of the sound when it was out of the groove so I'm pretty sure it was riding ok. BUT... The groove is pretty wide, so I began wondering today if perhaps ...

Horizontal striations in groove

Here are some pics from a test cut. It is noisy, and I'm wondering if these striations are part of the cause. Material is polycarbonate at 110F, tungsten stylus at ~20 degree angle, 3oz weight, light oil, and about 1W in the presto. I am seeing roughly 4.3mil grooves with 0.71mil p-p displacement. I...

Re: Presto 1-B guts and questions

Cool, thanks guys. I need to get some of that drill rod! I had no time to mess with it tonight but I will give your suggestions a try tomorrow. Great to know you will be a source for the pins, PR. Setscrews as well? As you see my bobbins are shot, so I might be in the market for a misc parts tuneup ...

Practical Disc Recording (1948) - Richard H. Dorf

Picked up an old and rather fragile copy of this one, so it's best to scan it in before it turns to dust. Interesting note - my printer made it searchable, I had no idea it could do that! Well enjoy this oldie but goody.. And let me know if you find pages out of order or anything. Practical_Disc_Rec...

Re: Presto 1-B guts and questions

Thank you all for your replies and advice! I have also been speaking to Markrob and his comments are in line with your own - those clever tips and tricks from those "in the know". I am interested if there is any guidance on the B spring (straight middle one) that holds the armature to the knife edge...

Presto 1-B guts and questions

Hi Folks, Got a 1-B, and I'm currently cleaning it up and getting the lay of the land. There is zero gap between the armature and the E-shaped laminated iron cores on either side, this can't be right - can it? Can anyone advise me on what gap I should be seeing between the E's and the armature? 100_...

Re: Recharge the magnet on a Presto 1D head, solve your probl

Wow, I was doubtful but after reading up - yes, it seems that a whack or two in a weak magnetic field can help magnetize ferrous materials. Amazing! Personally, I think Bryan did it right: Place it with a field so high that the weaker magnetic material is saturated. Done and done, no whacking needed...

Re: YADLB - Yet Another Desktop Lathe Build

Looking forward to hearing about your upgrades! I'm waiting for some DC motors, but actually this project may go on the back burner for a while - I'm getting a presto! I will learn on that, and plus - it will give me a reference to what kind of performance I SHOULD be getting. Then I will be able to...

Re: Recharge the magnet on a Presto 1D head, solve your probl

Love the video, but I'm a little dubious about their tapping. I suppose that if the coil could barely make enough field, some physical whacking might help the domains flop over.. But I thought that all you needed was to expose the material to a field greater than it's saturation limit, and poof - it...
