Re: Confused: Cutting angle
I see what you mean. It's hard to get a good side view but I'll take a look at the lathe tomorrow.

Re: Silly question: can i mod a 12" tonearm to 16"?
A 12" arm can play a 16" transcription disc with no problem at all. You may want to use the Hoffman calculator linked above to optimize the playback arc for the given disc. Most of the transcription discs I've seen only use the outer bands. Optimizing the arc for those bands would be beneficial and ...

Re: Confused: Cutting angle
It may be different for other systems/media but for master lacquers it's definitely B. The Neumann manual gives essential zero tolerance for cutting angle.

Re: Silly question: can i mod a 12" tonearm to 16"?
Sure. Pretty much anything can be modified if you know what to do. It's all about geometry, mass, etc. Here are a few tools to get you started: http://www.vinylengine.com/tonearm_alignment_calculator_pro.php http://www.vinylengine.com/overhang_shift_calculator.php http://www.vinylengine.com/arc-prot...

Hey Lewis,
You should talk to Kim. He has a few lying around.

Re: Digital Delay for VMS70 - Gauging Interest
96k is already overkill. Since you use your own converters you can find the most transparent set at 96k. I don't think anyone will ever be able to hear the difference between a 96k and 192k digital pass on playback.

Re: Currently active lathe operators taking orders?
and hoping to work with whoever's got the best rates and shortest turnaround currently... that's exactely wwhere i would NOT have records cut... For sure. Since this thread is almost two months old, it seems turnaround time is not critical. Pay an experienced operator a good price for excellent work.

Re: Studer A80 preview heads
Three things to note: 1) It's not clear from the listing what heads are on the block. An A 80 mkI needs center-tapped heads, for example. 2) This is a low speed block. It only supports up to 15ips at 33 1/3. The high speed block has an extra set of guides off to the side for speeds up to 30ips. 3) I...

Re: Maximum realistic frequency achievable on a record?
CD-4 has a carrier frequency of 30k. Looks crazy under a microscope. I think the practical question is what is the maximum frequency the average pick-up can track and reproduce without huge amounts of distortion. I've cut disks from 44k1 sources and seen harmonic detail all the way up to Nyquist on ...

Re: Transco Lacquers and Styli
I tried it this morning. I let the table spin down and I can hear the vertical distortion all the way to a dead stop. It's not tracking distortion.

Re: Transco Lacquers and Styli
It does sound like tracking distortion but it's there on different tables and different pick-ups so I think it's in the grooves. That's what I'm chasing down at the moment.

Re: Transco Lacquers and Styli
Yeah, all the usual mechanical stuff is right. It's only on very high frequency stuff like aggressive sibilance or very sharp transients. Stuff right at the edge. Clean sources are fine. I've cut a handful of things in the last few days that didn't show any sign of it but I have an old, very raw sou...

Re: Transco Lacquers and Styli
Yep, jumping through those hoops now. New stylus, different head, Apollos and MDC, two different pick-up systems. Still not gone. It's not audible in the feedback so I can't imagine it's anything electronic. Seems like is must be either the stylus or the head. It's not terrible but I have some very ...

Re: Transco Lacquers and Styli
Hey JJ,
I've been talking to Chris Muth about it. I tried cleaning the hole and reseating but it didn't help. I'll try another stylus. I don't hear this distortion in the feedback so I'm pretty confident it's mechanical. More testing...
