I like the pipe cleaner. I'll give that a go. Scraping the inside is admittedly not ideal. Luckily I don't get much dropped chip.

A b We wash the pick up tube with acetone quite often so as to stop this trouble I like scraping the tube with a straightened paper clip. Acetone makes the chip gummy. If you don't get all of it out of the tube it makes chip pick up harder because the new chip sticks to the gummy film. I could see ...

It looks like sapphire with a facet ground into it. What does yours look like? If you are implying that it damages the stylus, it doesn't. The only downside is that that it can go deep and weaken the edge of the stamper.

Mine does. I like the suspension a little loose. I find it rides over variations in the lacquer better. You also get less depth variation between the outside and inside diameter.

I have sort of the same thing but to a much lesser degree. It's lateral instability a few revolutions after the head drop. When you play around with the head suspension do you notice trends? Something like, if you loosen it makes it worse but if you go tighter it makes it better. The general thing w...

Does this happen in only one spot or every time you drop the head no matter the diameter?

You could use this too http://www.paia.com/midibrn.asp

Whoops, that's a CV to MIDI. They used to sell a MIDI to CV board but I don't see it.

It's also a VMS62 Special not an AM32. It's only good for parts. Good luck finding a vacuum top for the turntable.

I think 12 plus whatever else I could round up would be plenty to get him going. It's the guy who rebuilds the SX-74's. He worked for Stanton for many years designing phono carts. He's been winding coils for over 50 years. He showed me that he had drawer full of Stanton coil forms. I haven't talked ...

As I understand it Stanton was the sole supplier of these carts. I chased down someone at Stanton who knew what i was talking about but they had none hiding. I tried bribery. None of the custom cart suppliers want to do it that I know of. Maybe with a big enough order they would? I spoke to the head...

I have checked into this and no one that I have contacted would do it. I do know someone who could make them but it would be expensive. I know the Library of Congress would buy a couple. If there is enough interest I could pursue it further. Remember, it will be expensive and I won't be making any m...

If what Kevin suggests checks out as good you could try measuring the LL, LV, V control voltages at the output of the Zuma. If all control voltages look correct it is most likely a wiring problem in the lathe.

Re: any advice for an interested student?

and the condition of our equipment is questionable. I have no suggestions for an internship but the above seems like a golden opportunity. Research the equipment you have. It sounds like no one much cares about it. Try to make it work. You will learn much more than you will get out of an internship.

All I can see is a collection of smaller CD plants catering for smaller qty's to a larger user base Just like Vinyl The nimble will survive The corporate owned plants will go For Sure Right, that was my point. I also didn't mean there would be free presses for everyone. Paying pennies on the dollar...

Time to get a storage space for the abandoned presses. Just like vinyl it's death will be highly over rated. With free presses and non corporate profit margins it will be a good business.

re: Blown Fuse in Amp Problem/Reference Levels

Even though I don't have a test tone record yet, I think I managed to establish some kind of reference level because my HP400 has been precisely calibrated. I set the HP400 to +10 and got a 1kHz sine test tone to -6dB which should be +4dB/0 VU. I am aware I could be completely screwed up here, as I...
