Thanks for the info on the vacuum pump. I think this will work ok, but when you bring down the voltage with the Variac, does the motor run quietly?
Does it make much noise when you are cutting?

Perhaps uneven lacquer coating on the disk. The coating may be thinning out in the areas on the disk surface where you are seeing this.

If so, what are some of the benefits or pitfalls, such as receiving poor mixes to work with and then have to remaster the tracks on your time so that they will cut correctly to disk.
