Re: The future of History of Recorded Sound (Len Horowitz)

Let me add that without Len and Company, we'd be in a seriously sorry state. I wouldn't be making records. Many heads would go to perdition. Many amps would not be getting at all decent attention, to say nothing of the R&D they're pouring into our Art. Some of youse guys know, probably most don't. L...

Re: Great photo of Doug Sax/Mastering Lab Scully lathe

Just saw this unit at a storage facility in Glendale, CA. It is a worm drive with a totally lovely oil bearing. More interesting, I heard the record onsite just after it'd been pressed, actually there to hear the 'new' mastering Lab crossovers.

Re: My Shank recommendation !

May I add my voice to the above? I have been using MyShank for a couple of years, and despite the murderous shipping to the US, the products and service are beyond reproach. M. Chouet is tops!

Re: Making money / Supporting yourself cutting records?

Yes, it is absolutely a Labor of Love! It is also multi-disciplinary: think of all the things that can and usually do, go wrong! From the prosaic clogged chip tube, to bad tube sockets blowing a master... The R&D aspect is for me the tipping point: it is a permanent 'work in progress'. But as a way ...

Re: Pre-Mastering Digital Audio for Lathe Cuts??

Another thing to ask for from your cutting guy would be answer files - a transfer of the the audio to be cut post processing. This forms an excellent basis for the back-and-forth that yields the best product in the end. No MP3s!!! From a pro chain, the sound will be quite close to what you'll end up...

I am imagehaus, and available for lacquer masters, dubs, and PVC cutting on a tube Scully/Westrex system. I have a banner here, and my site is www.imagehaus.biz.

Re: Questions about scully lathes

With reference to that 2 second 'lead time', I have found in my system, a Scully "551" - thanks, Em! - with a somewhat re-engineered 261C, that 1 second is more than enough to carry the day. I suppose that could be more granularly realized, but I snap at 1 sec in Nuendo, which I use to drive the sys...

Re: Best price for a no frills pressing?

Bill Smith, in El Segundo, CA has given me satisfaction, and is fast and reasonable. I ship my lacs to Mastercraft, they forward to him. My own mastering service is very personal, and I find myself in more or less constant contact with clients throughout the sorting of the 'sound', using DropBox for...

Having done 100 plus PVC records.... 1. Opcode's plastic cutting guide is essential viewing - good job Todd! 2. MyShank products are superior in every way, including styli, and customer service is excellent!!! 3. Static is a big issue, and hose choice is key, and no, I have yet to find same that is ...

Re: Stylus force when cutting acetate sheets

I have to jump in and say, MyShank totally rocks! Fast delivery, too... I've cut a few hundred sides now, all speeds, all sizes, they sound quite close to lacquer. Fairly minimal static issues (baby powder is a must), also grounding your rubber hoses is (stop giggling) very effective - use a thin wi...
