Re: Half Speed Mastering

A vinyl mastering engineer can time stretch your program material either direction and cut to disc at a standard speed. If I'm not mistaken, I think he wants the same as me - to be able to cut real-time without all the digital artifacting involved by digitally compressing or stretching the original...

Re: Half Speed Mastering

Ever try mastering at 33 for 45 playback?
Intended for deep groove DMM because of the necessity for long sides (i.e at Teldec) it never really got off the ground because CDs were taking over - but extensive research says the 3/4 speed heads had a lot better sound.

Re: Attempting to cut the World's Largest Record

Too bad those gigantic advertising models of phono styli and cartridges that graced the walls and counters of stereo stores in the 70's are only made out of plexiglas. I think I still have the one for nude square shank hyper elliptic stylus not in a cantilever. It's like a foot tall and maybe 3x3 in...

Re: Attempting to cut the World's Largest Record

Trying to cut a four foot record with a normal size groove and cutterhead is going to be severely problematic. Although mastered on wax - look at the problems they had cutting the 50CM center start 120RPM Pathe's around the turn of the 20th Century. The groove had to be so wide (6-8 mils) as well as...

Re: DMM 33 mastering for 45 playback

I'm using the Best of the Doors CD4 LP for my testing. Like I said - that could be a c***shoot. Real early pressings on the green butterfly label are T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E and the ones that feel as if they were pressed on Superflex or Dynaflex etc - are worse than that. If you can get one on the black Qu...

Re: DMM 33 mastering for 45 playback

Hi, I'm not sure where you are getting the numbers that indicate that you need 100-200X sampling rate to encode/decode CD4. Lou Dorren's paper from the early-to-mid-2000's (Don't have the 2007 paper handy - just browsed it at the AES library. AFIK, the total analog bandwidth is in the 50 Khz range....

ither you are referencing very old informations from our side 2007 I've found some papers about CD-4 written by Lou Dorren in 2007/2008) Which is what we're going off of when we were first trying to consider doing this seven years ago. ...you have to supply properly prepared digital files. Re: DMM 33 mastering for 45 playback

We'll have to talk on the phone then cuz I spoke to a guy there already and he said 1. There's not a way to slow down the digital output at a lower pitch and slower speed to master at 33 for 45 playback - mastering is real-time only. 2. Same thing with taking down the RIAA curve to match, hence no a...

Re: Cutting Faster Than Real-Time? (100 rpm)

There may have been one experimental cutterhead at a university 40 - 50 years ago that could cut a 60K signal. One. You'll never find it. And you'll never find someone today that could make you the equivalent. Sorry. And if you do I have dibs so I can use it to cut DMM CD-4 real time mastering for ...

DMM 33 mastering for 45 playback

So has anybody tried it yet? Since it is going to be awhile before we are able to get the funding to be the only people to bring DMM back to America - (unless somebody has some inside connections at Gold Base in Hemet where Scientology has three) we were going to put the CD-4 part of CD-4-on-DMM on ...

Re: VMS-82/84 wanted to bring DMM back to America.

That's the same as I heard from Marcussen's people - that for the last couple of years DMM needed no refrigeration. Which would be nice. On a different topic - Talk about a waste of technology. I ended up with a doll-record master on a 14-inch DMM - probably 6 or 8 three-inch diameter cuts around th...

Re: G.E. PLAY TALK RECORDER DISCS

Anybody ever find or make some discs? I'd have used the old computer floppy discs taken out of the case as well - except I'd have used the 8-inch version and then re-made my spiral to accommodate the larger size - along with a template to support the extra width from underneath.

Re: VMS-82/84 wanted to bring DMM back to America.

@Mossboss I'm sure Bogantz or Dorren or any one of the old RCA Indy gang would know. Whether the guy you're looking for is still alive or not remains to be seen. I remember touring RCA Indy in middle school when they were still testing CED - by this time they'd been able to get 30 mins on a side vs ...

Re: VMS-82/84 wanted to bring DMM back to America.

trouble is - it only runs one speed 450 RPM and the only heads for it are the vertically modulated CED heads used to cut SelectaVision video. All the old Indy RCA technoheads I know all have a sore spot about DMM cuz they got convinced to trade it off to Telefunken for some other research (that - al...

Re: VMS-82/84 wanted to bring DMM back to America.

Well, copper cutting lathes at Gold Base Studios in Hemet. I always thought that was funny all by itself. And yes I heard about having to freeze blanks in some special kind of moistureless freezer from Marcussen years ago when we were first starting to float this idea (think it was back when Europad...

VMS-82/84 wanted to bring DMM back to America.

So now that we have our land and buildings out in the foothills of Yosemite and a place to put up the media transfer and restoration studio - we're starting to be on the lookout for a DMM lathe so we can be the only one in America offering the service. Already we're ``the only one offering the servi...
